Since the reform and opening in China, globalization has been speeding up and our contact with foreign countries has been increasingly frequent. With the rapid development of high-tech media, the popularity of Chinese pinyin and the growing spread of English education, a considerable number of English acronyms have poured into Chinese as foreign words.English acronyms in Chinese have become a new linguistic phenomenon. In recent years, Chinese scholars take this linguistic phenomenon as a hot spot of social linguistics and conduct extensive researches. The study on English acronyms in Chinese can not only provide a rich corpus for language contact theory and language development research, but also help to solve the problem of language norms. From the perspective of sociolinguistics, the thesis makes a comprehensive examination on how English acronyms enter Chinese, reasons and applied values of English acronyms in Chinese, and discusses principles and strategies when English acronyms are used in practice. This study attempts to answer four questions:1) Are English acronyms integrated with or in violation of Chinese language?2) What are the reasons of the mixed use of English acronyms in Chinese?3) Do English acronyms in Chinese have any values?4) What should we do to regulate English acronyms in Chinese? This research firstly reveals the reasons of English acronyms in Chinese from internal and external dimensions. Internal reasons include language interaction, word frequency and word length effect and symbol simplification, while external reasons involve social, psychological, cognitive and translation influence. Secondly, the research proves values of English acronyms in Chinese from cultural, contact, cognitive and pragmatic perspectives. Thirdly, the study proposes relevant principles and strategies due to the abuse and deregulations of English acronyms in Chinese. That English acronyms enter Chinese is a natural phenomenon, and the number of them grows in contact with foreign languages. Actually, the direct use of foreign words is not unique to Chinese in the history of language contact; any living language tends to contact with other languages. We have confidence and mind to accept English acronyms, as Chinese is a vital and powerful language in the world.
