Chu Wanghua is a Chinese composer and pianist. Although he lives in Australia, he is always missing his motherland-China. So the themes of both his independently-making work and revised ones focus on the Chinese features all the time. Most of his works are piano works, which can be divided into two types:independently-making work and revised work. And Eight Chinese Folk Songs belong to latter. All of these songs originate from fork song of different districts in China. Chu Wanghua collected them in nearly thirty years. Every song has its own title. In this collection, he applies a western method of composing songs and uses piano to present the revised traditional Chinese folk music. This paper will make a study on this collection from the perspective of both music analysis and the teaching of playing instruments. It covers the following four parts:First, this paper will make a brief introduction to Chu Wanghua and his works which include his life experience, career development, piano works and so on. And this introduction focuses on the folk characters of his work.Second, it will analyze the music style and playing skills of playing. At the beginning, these eight folk songs will be introduced. Later, each song will be analyzed from the perspective of chores, harmony and revision skill as well as its folk characters and playing skills.Third, the art value of these eight songs will be explored in this paper. The fork characters of these songs will be concluded and generalized. Many suggestions on their teaching will also be given.Forth, the conclusion of this paper covers the life experience of Chu Wanghua and his love for China. Eight Chinese Folk Songs not only reveals the composer’s music making style but also serves as an exploration on the nationalization of piano music. It is hoped that this paper can be valuable to the research of the collection of piano music.
