In Chinese classical poems, water-image is one of the most frequently usedimages. It runs through the history of Chinese classical poems and has various formsand properties. As the various forms of water-image can trigger diverse associations inhuman beings’ mind, it gradually embodies rich connotations. However, only a fewstudies have been done on the translation of water-image. Besides, the existing studieson water-image are mainly about the comparison of different versions and translationstrategies, which are short of systematical and theoretical discussion. Therefore,further exploration is urgently needed.The thesis attempts to discuss the translation of water-image from the perspectiveof "blank" concept. The concept stresses the initiative of the reader and his interactionwith the text. As the bridge of the author and the reader,"blank" stimulates theparticipation and imagination of the reader. Thus it carries great artistic and aestheticsignificance.In the light of the concept, the thesis discusses the defects in the existingtranslations of water-image in Chinese classical poems. Then, the thesis proposes thenecessity and feasibility of retaining the blanks in the translation of water-image inChinese classical poems. As far as the author of this thesis is concerned, the translatorshould not only transfer the connotations of the water-image, but also the artistic andaesthetic effects brought about by the blanks. In this way, the target reader is involvedto imagine and think about the relationships between water-image and other segments.Then he can gain not only the connotations of water-image but also the aestheticexperience. In addition, the thesis analyzes the main patterns that the translator adoptsto deal with the blanks. The consideration of rhyme and rhythm is the main reason foradjusting the structure of the original lines. Lastly, the thesis further explains thenecessity and rationality of retaining the blanks, based on the analysis of the artisticand aesthetic effects of retaining the blanks.
