A Cross-Cultural Study On The English Translation Of "Tao" In Zhuangzi

“TaO”(道)is a philosophical category with Chinese characteristics like "Virtue"(德),’’benevolence"(仁)and "righteousness"(义)," Ceremony"(礼),"Reason"(理),"Gas"(气),etc. This series of concepts are different from the formation of Western philosophy. By investigating the history of the key concept of "Tao" in "Zhuangzi" being translated into Nature, the Way, God and Tao, the author try to get the ideological and cultural factors from the cross-cultural perspective. The history of English translation of "Tao" in "Zhuangzi" is a process of constant understanding and re-interpretation, during which there runs through the stirring undercurrent of Chinese and Western philosophy and culture, of course, it also means that the rewrite and variability. After the analysis of Nature,(the) Way, God, we may clearly find that they are all pointing to the Western Christian world of thoughts. The inherent creation nature, the realm characteristic and the principle meaning of "Tao" in "Zhuangzi" were deeply branded with the color God. Then, the "Tao" was blended into the religious elements of discipline, guidance, fate and faith. It is no longer a wonderful realm of agreeable happiness. Above it, it stands the absolute authority of God who bears the suffering of the world, guide the approach of the human and plays the role of a savior. It can be seen that "Tao" has lost its original appearance in the process of being translated into English.Despite the differences between West and East culture, we can exchange and learn from each other. In the process of diversified cultural dialogue, we must first explore the development path and the basic characteristics of different cultures, then absorb the advanced nutrient of other cultures through the form of a dialogue. It is no doubt that it can make up for our shortcomings and deficiencies. Take the "Tao" in "Zhuangzi" for example, the differences on the understanding of the "Road" between West and East culture make the dialogue possible and necessary precisely. The author believes that the outcome of the dialogue should not be East Eats West, nor should it be the West Overwhelm East. We are committed to find a more effective path to solve the human problems. Thus, a "different" is just a normal thing, and " absorb and learn from each other" will truly reflect the ultra-step wisdom of human.
