Because of different improved revisions,a dictionary could become better than before.Improving definition of one dictionary is the key to improve its quality. Our country has along history of the development of the Chinese dictionaries. Since ancient China, the study ofselecting words around phonetic, glyph, explanation, and other aspects never ceased. Weshould pay enough attention to it. According to the systematic research on the paraphrase ofancient and modern Chinese dictionaries, by discussing the different types of definitions, definition content, interpretation principles and so on, we want to enrich Chinese dictionaryparaphrase theories. We also want it helpful for the Chinese dictionaries revision work.Defining occupies central position in the compiling work of dictionaries.Explanation isthe standard by which to judge what is good and what is bad about the quality ofdictionaries. At the same time, it is the lifeline of adictionary. From many years till now, manyspecialists and scholars have been doing so much research on the defining of dictionaries, which received a great deal of achievement. The achievement of explanation mainly includesthe relationship between scholium and the explanation of dictionary, the relationship betweenlinguistics and lexicography, function of the analysis of YiSu on meaning discrimination, establishing and forming of item of a dictionary entry, methods of explanation, drawback ofexplanation and so on. Our first chapter is mainly to sort out and generalize thoseachievement above, in order to upgrade the degree of accuracy of explanation. The second chapter is about the analysis of the ancient legal words. We take somesamples which from both Chinese language dictionary and legal dictionary to inspect and tocontrast, descriping and analyzing their different ways of definition. At last,we summariz theirtypes and numbers to seek the deep reasons which cause such differences.Along with the development of linguistics, especially the advancement of the vocabularyof semantics, paraphrase patterns of legal words in modern Chinese dictionaries are muchmore complex than they’re in ancient Chinese dictionaries. In the third chapter, we use thecombination of research methods of quantitative statistics and nature to analyz the commonlegal words both in Modern Chinese Dictionary and in Legal Dictionary. In this part, we useparaphrase patterns of Fu Huaiqing(2006) as a reference to analyz the verb samples and thenoun samples, in order to clear the differences and the common ground between the definitions of modern Chinese dictionaries and the definitions of ancient Chinese dictionaries. The fourth chapter content of our research is based on the two frontal chapters. We take adiachronic comparison between the paraphrase patterns of ancient and modern Chinese legalwords, to show the advancement and the deficiency during the historical development ofChinese dictionaries. In this research, we found some valuable regular phenomenon. At the same time, on thebasis of predecessors’ explanation, the present research indicates some shortcomings, whichneed further reflection. But dictionary editors have to confront it, which would be thebreakthrough point of creative conception of dictionaries in the future.
