Context, conversational communication environment, rules and limits communicational content, form and result. Over a long period of time, people have been trying to figure out what content means with great devotion through constant study. Based on learning and sorting out research achievements made by specialists, this essay will review its historical root and development, and make a comparison between traditional context view and dynamic context view. In turn, the article will put forward several personal opinions on context study. The whole passage is composed of the following six chapters.Chapter One:Introduction. First, it stresses the importance of context, indicating it is the base on which languages rely and it is closely related to other subjects; second, it summarizes both western and eastern ancient scholars’research results; then, it analyses the current proceedings of context study; last, with the hope that other researchers are able to make a deeper, more comprehensive overview on context, by means of organizing static and dynamic context research methodologies, the essay illustrates the purpose and meaning of this chosen topic.Chapter Two:The Occurrence and Development of Western Context Theory. First, it briefly shows how context theory came about and developed in western countries; second, it describes various types of theories in detailed, such as Peirce’s ’Vocabulary Index’theory, Malinowski’s’Meaning Behind the Meaning’theory, Firth’s’language context and situational context’theory, Han Lied’s’Register Theory’, Himes’’Analysis on Context Make-up’, etc. and then makes concise comments on individual theory in perspective of its contributions and drawbacks.Chapter Three:Context Research Done By Chinese Modern Scholars. This is a k ey chapter made up of five parts. First, it has a detailed micro-classification and arran gement on the modern Chinese context research profits achieved by major scholars wi th aspects of its constitution, sorts, function and character, and then the writer makes a summary, hoping that all of the above information may play a certain role in others e xperts’research.Chapter Four:New Development of Context Theory-Dynamic Context Concept. First, it introduces the dynamic characteristics of context, and points out that it is essential to observe and study context with a developing sight; second, it has a comparative detailed description on Spur Park and Wilson’s’Cognitive Context’ theory,Verschueren’s’Conform to Language’theory and Chinese scholars like Liu Yunquan, Lin Xingren, and Xiong Xueliang’s’dynamic context’theory.Chapter Five:Traditional Context View and Dynamic Context View. This chapter is divided into five parts. First, it basically looks back upon what has generally done with traditional context research, with statements of its values and disadvantages; second, it analyses the present research situation, and sums up its advances; third, based on an analysis and comparison of these two views basis, it uncovers that the development of dynamic context view depends on traditional one, with which we may find out that these two views supplement and complement each other; fourth, according to the above-comparison, the writer will come up with a context research methods that combines dynamic concepts with static ones. By the way, this method is just an assumption, with no scientific evidence. Last, make a summary in the end.Chapter Six:A New and Developing Subject Comes out-Pragmatics. This chapter has two parts. First, it starts by giving related background information on how pragmatics is set up; second, it focuses on several scholars’accounts of necessity of establishing this new subject. Besides, it stresses the practical access to pragmatics.
