The creation of travel literature about China has a long tradition and reached its peak in modem times. They represent the destination and scenes along the way in travelers’ eyes. Comparing to the image of the "foreign land", authors’ reflection upon it behind the point "I am a foreigner and thus my opinion is different from that of Chinese" is of significant importance, and is worthwhile to examine ourselves.Oka Senzin (1833-1914) was a Chinese poet and a sinologist from the end of the Shogunate period to the Meiji period and had relations with many scribes of the late Qing. Form1884to1885, Mr. Oka had travelled extensively in China for more than300days. In1886, the book Guan Guang Ji You, which was a record of Mr. Oka’s experience in China, was published in Japan and had become one of three most representative travel notes about China in Chinese during the Meiji period.By taking Oka Senzin’s Guan Guang Ji You as the main object of study, this dissertation uses comprehensive and comparative research approaches to study the late Qing in the view of Oka Senzin. Starting from foreign studies of China, entering into China, and going back to foreign lands, finally we return tortuously to China and reflect on ourselves. The author hopes to "view China from our neighbors", discuss from different angles and analyze the materials profoundly with the goal in mind of apprehending the late Qing better.Apart from the introduction, the main body divides into three chapters. Firstly, the author tries to discuss the general features of the travel literature about China by overseas people in modern times. Then, on the basis of the above generalization, the research explores Oka Senzin and his Guan Guang Ji You. Finally, this dissertation analyzes the contacts between Chinese and Japanese scribes in modern times.Chapter I is the late Qing revealed in the travel literature about China by overseas people. Due to the differences of traditional characters and developments of the travel literature about China, this chapter divides into three sections: the late Qing revealed in the travel literature about China by Korean and Vietnamese people during the middle and later periods of the19th Century, the late Qing revealed in the travel literature about China by Japanese people after "Qian Sui Wan’"s voyage to Shanghai, and the late Qing revealed in the travel literature about China by western people during the middle and later periods of the19th Century. Chapter I aims to supply literary and historical backgrounds for studying Oka Senzin and his Guan Guang Ji You in later chapters.Chapter II is Oka Senzin and his Guan Guang Ji You. Section I provides a brief survey of Oka Senzin’s life and academic career, the author wants to complete previous discussion by collecting Mr. Oka’s various books. Section II is the further discussion on the formation and edition of Guan Guang Ji You, and then deals with its circulation and acceptance. Section III describes the society of the late Qing in the view of Mr. Oka through interpreting relative records in Guan Guang Ji You and talks about the change of Oka Senzin’s perspective on China.Chapter III is Guan Guang Ji You and the contacts between Chinese and Japanese scribes in modern times. Section I explores the contacts between Oka Senzin and the scribes of the Qing Dynasty from the aspect of book purchasing and presenting. Section II portrays Oka Senzin’s voyage to China in the view of other people according to relative records by Chinese scribes in modern times and mediums of the late Qing, especially Shen Bao.The concluding remark is eyes of overseas people: reflect on ourselves through others. This dissertation researches on Oka Senzin’s Guan Guang Ji You and other travel literature about China by overseas people in modern times in order to reflect on China and apprehend the late Qing better.
