A Study Of Wuchen’s Phonetic Notations On Zhaoming Wenxuan Of Chenba Lang’s Version

Zhaoming Wenxuan was edited by Prince Xiaotong in Liang Dynasty. It’s the known oldest collection of poems in Chinese literature. Lishan collected and annotated Wenxuan from thirty volumes to sixty in Xianqing years of Tang Dynasty. It has been well-known until now. Later five liegemen annotated it and made it thirty volumes again in the sixth year of Kaiyuan. Wuchen’s Annotations on Wenxuan is as important as Lishan’s Annotations since it came into being. As an important part of Wenxuan’s studies, scholars often ignored its value for simple contents. But it has lots of phonetic notations and little research is on it. If we study Wuchen’s Phonetic Notations, we will find its unique characters different from Lishan’s. This dissertation makes a study of the phonology in Wuchen’s phonetic notations and is divided into seven chapters. The contents are as follows:Chapter One is an introduction, mainly about the aims, meanings, materials, methods and a brief account of studies on the phonetic notations of Wenxuan.Chapter Two is a general account of the five liegemen and Wuchen’s Annotations on Wenxuan. First it’s a research of the five liegemen’s life; second, it’s an introduction of its background, spread and version. A comparison is made and I chose what I studied in my paper; third, it’s about the naming of Wuchen’s Phonetic Notations on Wenxuan to make sure its effectiveness; finally, it’s a brief introduction of the similarities and differences between Chenba Lang’s and Zhengde’s version.Chapter Three is an comparative analysis of Wuchen’s and Li Shan’s Phonetic Notations on Wenxuan. At first it is carried out on contents; and then the styles.Chapter Four is a study on initial consonants of Wuchen’s Phonetic Notations on Wenxuan. This chapter is a research on Fanqie and zhiyan based on lip, tongue, tooth and throat. The conclusion is that it has thirty-five initial consonants.Chapter Five is study on vowel of a Chinese syllable. First it Xilian Wuchen’s Phonetic Notations in the sequence of Shiliu Yunshe; then, it analyzed the results of Xilian; finally the conclusion is that the vowel of a Chinese syllable of Wuchen’s Phonetic Notations on Wenxuan is twenty-nine.Chapter Six is an account on tone of Wuchen’s Phonetic Notations on Wenxuan. Compared with Guangyun, the tone consists of Ping, Shang, Qu and Ru.Chapter Seven is conclusion. Through the analysis of Chapter Four, Five and Six, the result is that Wuchen’s Phonetic Notations on Wenxuan has thirty-five initial consonants, twenty-nine vowels of a Chinese syllable. The tone consists of Ping, Shang, Qu and Ru. The vowels that represent are speech sounds system of standard reading in Tang Dynasty.
