Throughout Kangxi Period, Yongzhen Period and Qianlong Period, the porcelain industry in China entered a prime stage, during which craftsmanship level of porcelain production also arrived at a historical peak. Namely, a variety of porcelains were newly created, the production cycle was shortened, and separation of workforce was detailed, and the capability of manufacturing porcelains catering for the overseas market. Huge numbers of porcelains flew into other parts of world such as Asia, Africa, and Europe, among which European countries were a major market for imported porcelains from China.During these periods,the patterns of the exported porcelains contained all sorts of images depicting the eastern and western society, apart from very Chinese traditional patterns, such as landscape, flowers and birds, and blissing patterns. Portrait pattern was applied to porcelains in large quantity, which included mythologies coming from East and West, dramas and novels, religions and secular life. All these patterns were of great importance for us to learn a true society in East and West in the18th century, and understand art integration at that time between the Orient and Occident.The dissertation aims at giving a detailed analysis about portrait patterns of exported porcelains produced during Kangxi Period, Yongzhen Period, and Qianlong Period. It contains four parts:the first one introduces the present situation of portrait research; the second one divides portrait patterns into two classifications according to the porcelain categories, which are mainly blue and white porcelains, and colored porcelains. Words and pictures vividly generalizes and analyses and unravels features of both categories; the third one inteprets the contents of what these portrait patterns reflect after three categories of portraits are classified, and they are Chinese portraits, Western portraits, and blended portraits. Examples are illustrated to address cultural connotation of these three types of portraits; the fourth one introduces the development of porcelains in Europe, and the influence on local porcelains patterns exerted by imported porcelains from China.
