| Interpreting in a specific field is quite different from common interpreting, forthe former requires the interpreter not only to master bilingual knowledge andinterpreting skills, but also familiarize himself with the thematic knowledge andtechnical terminologies relevant to the interpreting task. Therefore, it is of greatimportance to prepare before interpreting. The concept of schema is raised by the British psychologist Bartlett. Accordingto Schema Theory, the process of comprehension is the concrete realization of theschema, which is the main channel for the realization of background knowledge andschema. Schema can be divided into language schema, content schema and formalschema. PBI (Preparation Before Interpreting) work can be conducted in terms of thetypes of schema, and they are preparation in technical terminologies, backgroundknowledge and discourse formats. The thesis elaborates on how to prepare before interpreting based on theschema theory. To further prove the importance of PBI to ISP (Interpreting forSpecific Purpose), the author has conducted an experiment and the result is: PBIcorrelates with interpreting performance positively; defects in interpreting can bemade up by PBI; Different schemata (language, content and formal) play differentroles in enhancing interpreting performance. So, PBI should be attached greatimportance in interpreting teaching and learning. It’s suggested that PBI-relevantskills should be included into interpreting curriculum and optional courses onthematic knowledge are preferably offered to students to enhance their awareness inPBI and interpreting capability. |
