Korea has received much influence from China politically, culturally andeducationally due to geographical reasons. Korean students have more advantage inlearning the Chinese language compared to the students from the other nations, who areunfamiliar of the Chinese. One major problem for the Korean students when they arelearning Chinese is that sometimes, they predict the definition of an unfamiliar Chinesevocabulary, by its pronunciation or shape. The definition that they predict maysometimes be right or wrong. If the Korean students are not able to distinguish thedifferences between Chinese and Sino-Korean words used in Korea, they would havemuch difficulty in communication with the native Chinese people.The purpose of this study is to compare the meanings of the highly frequent Sino-Korean words with the modern Chinese and investigate the process of variation. AllSino-Korean words are selected from the Information of the Chinese: Common vocabulary of the modern Chinese(2008, The Commercial Press). By comparing meanings ofthe Sino-Korean words from the Grand Dictionary with these of Chinese Words fromthe Modern Chinese Dictionary, I find that there are1000Homograph words betweenSino-Korean and Chinese in the aggregate, including the words with completelydifferent meaning,221words; and the words with partially different meaning,779words. Further, the words with partially different meaning have been classified intothree parts. The first one is the other meaning in Korean besides the common meaning.The second one is the other meaning in Chinese besides the common meaning. And thethird one is the additional meanings both in Korean and in Chinese besides the commonmeaning. I study and analyze the cause of emerging homograph between Chinese andKorean for revolved around theory of “ullmann”.I sincerely hope this study can contribute the reference to the people who arelearning Korean or Chinese.
