A Study On Tagore’s Visit To China From The Perspective Of Modern Chinese Literature

As a historical event, Tagore’s visit to China in1924has attracted wide attention fromChinese cultural circle, literary circle and ideological circle. Tagore has encountered differentattitudes like flowers, clapping, praise, worship, approving, derogating, criticizing, attacking,denying and abuse, which is rare in the literary circle of China. While, the different attitudes andmisunderstanding among the scholars in China’s intellectual circles to Tagore’s visit reflected theirefforts to China’s modernization. That those scholars expressed their ideas bravely on the road fullof conflicts is the expression of insisting their standpoint and expecting the modernization of China.Whether in Europe and America or in China, Tagore unswervingly disseminated his ideasabout oriental cultures. Tagore’s quiet and harmonious oriental cultural connotations, argument ofpromoting spiritual civilization and opposing material civilization once satisfied the imagination tooriental cultures from western social and westerners, but that was not fit for the complex politicalsituation of Chinese society at that time. When the Chinese literary world was occupied by theaggressively spreat western cultures, the spirit of marching forward in “May Four” and the risingrevolutionary thoughts, Chinese cultural circle, literary circle and ideological circle took disputedattitudes towards Tagore’s oriental cultural connotations during his visit. This dispute triggered themutual-referencing between oriental and western cultures among domestic scholars, and theacademic exploration and research of how the long traditional national culture moved towardsmodernization and the world.Caused by time and personal problems, it is inevitable that Chinese literary world at that timehad some misunderstanding to Tagore’s visit. By excavating and restoring the substantivequestions after Tagore’s visit, rethinking of Chinese and western cultural resources can offer us alot of feasible thinking about our study on the trends and rebuilt of contemporary Chinese cultures,can offer us a good reference and enlightenment for better combining the national characters ofChinese literary and the globalization and epoch of literary, for reasonably treading oriental andwestern cultural resources and promoting the development of national cultures and literary.
