With expanding economic and cultural communication between Chinaand the western world, more and more western TV programs and filmproducts become available to the Chinese audience. This gives rise to theheated discussion on subtitle translation as it is becoming a more importantpart of translation practice. As a visual aide and supplementation of theimage, translated subtitles could be seen as the vocal message delivered inwritten form. Due to the time and space limits of the text type it serves, translation of this kind bears some features which differ from traditionaltypes of translation. This thesis conducts an analysis on the cross-culturalphenomena in TV program subtitle translation. The chosen samples are fromthe23rdseason of the British comedy panel game show Never Mind theBuzzcocks translated by the volunteer subtitle group ragbear.com. The focusof the research will be on the translation of cross-cultural languagephenomena such as the translation of humor and the strategies adopted, striving to identify effective strategies for translators to adopt under theinfluence of translation purposes. Through the analysis, the role of thetranslator in terms of choosing translation strategies has been highlighted. While helping translators to better understand the theory and to have abetter idea of how to apply it to actual translation practices, this tentativeresearch also aims at serving as a source of reference for future study in thisfield.
