Objective: To Analyze the clinical factors affecting the Fontaine stagesof lower extremity arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO).Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed with the clinical datafrom50ASO patients who were hospitalized in the Department of GeneralSurgery, the Affiliated Hospital of North Sichuan Medical College betweenDecember2010and December2012. Univariate and multivariate analyses onthe Fontaine stages were also performed using the ordinal logistic regression, and a cross-validation test was carried out to verify the judgment by themultivariate analysis. Results: As staged with imaging,2(4%) of the50cases wereunidentified,2(4%) without stenosis,10(20%) with reduction in the innerdiameter by1%-19%,17(34%) with reduction in the inner diameter by20%-49%,10(20%) with reduction in the inner diameter by50%-99%, and9(18%) with total occlusion. Results of the Fontaine stages were: stage I,8cases (16%); stage IIa,17(34%); stage IIb,12(24%); stage III,10(20%); andstage IV,3(6%). Imaging stages, hemoglobin concentration, thrombin time, blood viscosity, platelet counts and platelet distribution width were influentialfactors of the Fontaine stages. Prediction of the Fontaine stages was with anaccuracy of48%and the accuracy was44%with cross-validation. When theFontaine stages were classified as3stages–I, IIa+IIb+III and IV, theprediction accuracy and the cross-validation accuracy were both84%.Conclusion: Imaging staging in combination with clinical factors couldincrease the accuracy of Fontaine staging.
