Objective:To investigate the influence of nonintellectual factors on the research capacity of master nursing students.Methods:1Revise the Nursing Research Capacity of Self-Evaluation Questionnaire (NRC-SQ) and develop the Chinese version Research Motivation Scale (RMS) according to the standard procedure of cross-culture adaptation after getting the authorization of the developers, and then evaluate their reliability and validity in157master nursing students.2A total of249master nursing students were investigated with Nursing Research Capacity of Self-Evaluation Questionnaire (NRC-SQ). Research Motivation Scale (RMS). Creative Self-efficacy Scale for Chinese College Students (CSES), Self-Control Scale for Chinese College Students (SCS) and self-designed general information questionnaire in a cross-sectional study.Results:1The reliability and validity of the Nursing Research Capacity of Self-Evaluation Questionnaire(1) Reliability of the scaleThe cronbach’s α coefficient of the overall scale was0.97and the value of a in6subscales were above0.70, the Spearman-Brown split coefficient of the whole scale was0.91and the value of split coefficient in6subscales were above0.60, and the test-retest reliability coefficient of the whole scale was0.73and the value of test-retest reliability coefficient in6subscales were above0.60.(2) Validity of the scale1) Construct Validity:Stratified factor analysis demonstrated that the items of each dimension could account for more than50%of the accumulated variance and the loading factors were above0.50.2) Content Validity:the correlations of the items with each subscale were0.62-0.93, and correlations of the subscales with the overall scale were0.50-0.91.2The reliability and validity of the Chinese version RMS(1) Reliability of the scaleThe cronbach’s α coefficient of the overall scale was0.88and the value of a in3subscales were above0.70, the Spearman-Brown split coefficient of the whole scale was0.87and the value of split coefficient in3subscales were above0.60, and the test-retest reliability coefficient of the whole scale was0.70and the value of test-retest reliability coefficient in3subscales were above0.60.(2) Validity of the scale1) Construct Validity:Stratified factor analysis demonstrated that the items of each dimension could account for more than40%of the accumulated variance and the loading factors were above0.40.2) Content Validity:the correlations of the items with each subscale were0.58-0.80.3The influence of nonintellectual factors on the research capacity of master nursing students(1) Total score of Research Capacity of Master nursing students was (74.32±15.97), and the entries average of each dimension were searching and reviewing literature (2.64±0.54). writing a research report (2.62±0.70), practicing research (2.45±0.78), analyzing research data and material (2.40±0.45), designing research protocol (2.33±0.67). generating the research ideas (2.21±0.56) in the descending order.(2) The correlations of age, grade and the experience as a student leader with Research Capacity:Age was positively correlated with total score of Research Capacity and scores of designing research protocol, practicing research, analyzing research data and material and writing a research report(P<0.01, P<0.05); The master nursing students in grade2and grade3scored higher than those in grade1in research capacity, searching and reviewing literature, designing research protocol, practicing research, analyzing research data and material and writing a research report(P<0.05); The master nursing students who used to be a student leader scored higher than those who haven’t been one in generating the research ideas and designing research protocol.(3) The correlations of nonintellectual factors with Research Capacity:The master nursing students with interests in research scored higher than those without interests in research in generating the research ideas, searching and reviewing literature and practicing research (P<0.05). The scores of intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation were positively correlated with total score of research capacity and scores of6subscales (P<0.01); the score of failure avoidance motivation was positively correlated with total score of research capacity and scores of searching and reviewing literature, designing research protocol, practicing research, analyzing research data and material and writing a research report(P<0.01,P<0.05). The scores of self-efficacy in sensitivity, flexibility, originality and fluidity in master nursing students were positively correlated with total score of research capacity and scores of6subscales (P<0.01). The score of impulse control was positively correlated with the scores of searching and reviewing literature, analyzing research data and material(P<0.01,P<0.05); the score of healthy habits was positively correlated with the scores of searching and generating the research ideas, reviewing literature(P<0.05); the scores of resisting temptations, focusing on work and recreation control were positively correlated with total score of research capacity and scores of6subscales (P<0.01, P <0.05).(4) Hierarchical regressions were used to analyze the factors that influencing research capacity and its dimensions. The predictive nonintellectual factors of research capacity sorted by variance were self-efficacy of flexibility and fluidity (23%), research motivation (10%) and dedicated work attitude (3%), the sum variance was36%. The predictive nonintellectual factors of generating the research ideas sorted by variance were self-efficacy of originality (20%), interests in research (7%) and intrinsic motivation (4%), the sum variance was31%. The predictive nonintellectual factors of searching and reviewing literature sorted by variance were self-efficacy of originality (10%), research motivation (9%) and interests in research (2%), the sum variance was21%. The predictive nonintellectual factors of designing research protocol sorted by variance were self-efficacy of flexibility and fluidity (13%), extrinsic motivation and failure avoidance motivation (9%) and dedicated work attitude (4%), the sum variance was26%. The predictive nonintellectual factor of practicing research was self-efficacy of flexibility, which account for15%of the variance. The predictive nonintellectual factors of analyzing research data and material sorted by variance were self-efficacy of flexibility and fluidity (22%), and failure avoidance motivation (8%), the sum variance was30%. The predictive nonintellectual factors of writing a research report sorted by variance were self-efficacy of flexibility and fluidity (12%), and extrinsic motivation (8%), the sum variance was20%.Conclusions:1The Nursing Research Capacity of Self-Evaluation Questionnaire and the Chinese version of Research Motivation Scale are reliable and valid measurements to assess the research capacity and research motivation of master nursing students.2The research capacity of master nursing students needs to be improved. Nursing educators should develop some intervention measures to help nursing students, especially those in grade one and who haven’t been a student leader, to enhance their research capacity.3Nonintellectual factors play a very important role in enhancing research capacity in master nursing students, especially creative self-efficacy and research motivation. Nursing educators should pay more attention to the development of nonintellectual factors to help nursing students enhance their research capacity, such as inspire interests in research, enhance self-control ability, arouse intrinsic motivation, promote the internalization of extrinsic motivation, lower failure avoidance motivation, and enhance creative self-efficacy of master nursing students.
