The quality evaluation of the Chinese medicine involves the tests of the effective components, the toxic substances and their changes during the whole processes, from the planting to the production, and the usage of the medicine, which are complex and cumbersome. The quality control of Chinese medicine is important and many methods have been developed. However, many of the methods are inconvenient or inaccurate. In this study, we use Lonicera japonica Thunb. and S. baicalensis Georgi, two kinds of most common Chinese medicine to study the quality control methods of the Chinese medicine. The dried flowers and blossoms of Lonicera japonica Thunb. is the most common Chinese medicine and is of high medical value. It is used to address excess heat conditions such as fevers, skin rashes, and sore throat. Excess heat conditions are essentially inflammatory processes involving heat, redness, pain, and swelling, normally resulted from external pathogenic factors such as bacteria and viruses. Its cold nature is considered to cool the heat nature of the heat related conditions. The dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi is one of the50fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine. It has been reported to have antiasthmatic, antifungal, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatroy activites. In this thesis, we use UV spectrum and chemometrics as the analysis method. Chemometrics is the science of extracting information from chemical systems by data-driven methods. It is a highly interfacial discipline, using methods frequently employed in core data-analytic disciplines such as multivariate statistics, applied mathematics, and computer science, in order to address problems in chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, biology and chemical engineering. Its application in Chinese medicine is developing recently. The classification and quality evaluation methods of Lonicera japonica Thunb. and S. baicalensis Georgi were studied in Chapters2and3. The data were obtained by the UV spectrum and HPLC analyses of the two kinds of medicine. To start with, the data was standard normal variate transformed, multiplicative scatter corrected to smooth the spectrum curve and eliminate the impact of impurities. Then we use the principle component analysis (PCA) to cluster all different samples. And the partial least squares (PLS) model was used to forecast different index of the samples. A relatively mature quality evaluation system was built.
