Depression is widely seen as a kind of mood disorder which acted as:down in sprit, decreasing in interest and activity, falling in self evaluation. Depression has a high incidence and may bring damage to patients and society, cause high suicide rate and large economic loss. At present, antidepressant drugs treatment, Chinese medicine treatment, electroconvulsive therapy treatment and psychological treatment are the common treatments for depression. Traditional Chinese Medicine has a lot of advantages in prevention and cure of depression.According to TCM, liver belongs to wind and wood and causes fire-syndrome easily. Theories like "there is more excess syndrome than deficient syndrome in liver disease" and "Yang excess and Yin deficiency of liver" are pointed out but few discussed about deficiency of liver Yang. Neglecting of deficiency of liver Yang leads a lot of defects. We find out:deficiency of liver Yang exists in diseases from document arrangement, theoretical analysis and clinical observation, which is commonly seen in depression.This research is based on recent research of "pathogenesis of five internal organs of depression" by document arrangement, theoretical analysis and clinical observation. We put forward a new point of view:deficiency of liver Yang is an important pathogenesis of depression. Rx is also raised to this syndrome of depression. This research is a supplement of the pathogenesis of depression and may have some directive significance to clinical treatment.Clinical observation:Patients those who were observed should be diagnosed as paralepsy, according to CCMD3, HAMD≥20, SDS≥53, aged16-65and no organic disease or primary disease. The results showed:The amount of cases of disease location divided as the five internal organs:liver is the most. These cases all had a long duration and performances deficiency-excess complication.94%cases showed deficiency, of which56%Yang deficiency. Lots of depression patients existed deficiency of liver Yang.Theoretical research:depression caused by deficiency of liver Yang may appears warming dysfunction, insufficient of ascending, insufficient of catharsis, loss of nourishing the muscle and tendon, loss of storing soul, imbalance of Yin and Yang and cold-heat mixed up. Rules of treatment for depression caused by deficiency of liver Yang can be summarized as follows:tonify Yin and Yang together, combine with function and body, reducing fever and warming Yang combination and tonification and purgation in combination. We may treat this kind of syndrome by addition or subtraction of changes of Wengan-Jieyu Tang.
