Objective: In order to reduce the rate of recumbent laryngeal nerve (RLN)injury in thyroid surgery. We study the method of exposing and recognizingRLN in thyroid surgery. What more we evaluate the significance of suchmeasures to procide a reliable way to protect RLN in thyroid surgery. Methods: We collected clinical data of3650patients with thyroid diseaseretrospectively. Patients were devided into two groups by exposing RLN or not.Occurrence rate of RLN injury were canpared betweer two groups. In this way,we search for a safer and more reliablr way to proteat RLN in the operation. Results: There are3650patients with thyroid diease in this study.2480patients were included in the exposing group, whilr1170patients were bolongto control group, which was consist of0.58%(11/1892) in primary surgery and2.04%(12/588) in reopation. On the other hand, control group receive a RLNinjury occurrence rate of2.99%(35/1170). Which was consist of2.33%(24/1027) in primary surgery and7.69%(11/143) in re-operations.Conclusion: Exposure of RLN in thyroid operation is an effective way toprevent RLN injury, especially in patients of thyroid re-operation.
