Chronic glomerulonephritis (CGN), short for chronic nephritis (CN), refers to a series of glomerular disease with the basic clinical manifestations as proteinuria、hematuria、hypertension and edema. It occurs at any age. Being mild to severe, CGN would cause varying degrees of renal dysfunction. If repeating, CGN will gradually develop for chronic kidney fai lure (chronic renal failure, CRF). At present, the percutaneous renal biopsy is taken as the important means of diagnosing the pathology types of glomerular disease. With Chinese medicine treatment, there is no need to renal biopsy, but simply reference to some basic indicators, such as urine routine, liver function, renal function. By the combination of all, the overall grasp of the patient’s condition, it can roughly diagnose the general development and prognosis of the disease, which fully reflected the advantages of Chinese medicine in the treatment of chronic nephritis.Professor Cao considered that Chinese and Western medicine have their own advantages in the treatment of chronic nephritis. For example, in curing hypertension, Western medicine is more convenient and effectible than traditional Chinese medicine. That’s what the Chinese say "vital qi in, keep the pathogenic qi away", whose effect the Western medicine can not achieve. It shows the further development of Chinese medicine treatment to chronic nephritis in the future.It’s my honor to follow professor Cao. Having seen a number of patients recover in the treatment of Prof. Cao, I benefited a lot, and firmly believed that the traditional Chinese medicine had made great curative effects for kidney diseases. According to the tutor’s guidance and my observation, I collected some ideas about the treatment of Chronic nephritis. In this paper, Chinese medical literature about CN will be discussed firstly; then it makes the descriptions of Prof. Cao’s thoughts to the etiology and pathogenesis of chronic nephritis、the experience of the CN treatment and the diet guidance; finally combined with the current clinical studies of integration of traditional and western medicine, some discussion and new ideas will be raised. By concluding clinical experience of Prof. Cao, it provided useful guidance for clinical study.
