"phlegm cumulating" was firstly described in "Synopsis Prescriptions of Jin-kui" and expounded in the special chapter "Jin-Kui. Abnormal pulse syndrome and treatment of phlegm cumulating and coughing". There are thirty three detailed representations in the chapter about it which including the cause, mechanism, naming, classification, treatment, medicine and so on. All the above-mentioned layed solid foundation for the the development of "phlegm cumulating"As verificated in documents and addressed by Zhang zhongjing, we can concluded that "phlegm cumulating" said by Zhang zhongjing is not "phlegm" but actualy "cumulating". To distinguish from phlegm syndrome, it was called cumulating bellow.Pathogenic fluid-reteneion is induced by lung, spleen, kidney deficiency in Yang Qi, disturbance in Qi-flowing and retention in body fluid. The most critical inducement of pathogenic fluid-reteneion is negative splenic Yang. The pathogenesis belongs to deficiency of Yang and excess of Yin, and so its rotting treatment method is warming yang for activating qi-flowing to eliminate pathogenic cumulating. Based on this Zhang zhongjing proposed that "mild treatment should be applied in phlegm cumulating disease". All the treatments prescription for cumulatin of Zhang zhongjing abide this method. This method also designate a direction for the later physician. The formation mechanism and treatment principle of cumulating disease was revealed according to Zhang zhongjing’s theory about cumulating disease and ancient medical literature research. Its pathogenesis is characterized by insufficiency of Yang-Qi, disturbance in Qi-flowing, internal retention of body fluid. Accordingly, his treatment method that "mild treatment should be applied in phlegm cumulating disease" was extremely correct. This paper presents the flexibility and principle of Zhang zhongjing in the treatment of cumulating disease. His principle was performanced in that warm drugs were always used in the treatment of cumulating disease, and flexibility was in addiation to the rule guidance of "mild treatment should be applied in phlegm cumulating disease" treatment method, sweat, diuresis, and by the water method were also used. Then, the function, compatibility, plus minus variation and indication extention of Zhang’s representative prescription (Lingguizhugan Decoction) in treating cumulating disease were summed up and summarized and with the help of modern pharmacological research results in order to prove that Lingguizhugan Decoction in treating cumulating disease, not only have deep basic traditional Chinese medicine theory, but also have modern pharmacological experimental data support. Besides, the property and flavor, efficiency, Medication taboo, chemical composition and pharmacological action investigation of the commonly used medicinal materials in Zhang’s treatment in cumulating disease, such as tuckahoe, pinellia, atractylodes macrocephala, ramulus cinnamomi were inductioned and Summarized to prove the scientific usage in the medicinal materials of Zhang zhongjing.Eventually, the standpoint, treatment method, prescription of traditional Chinese physician about cumulating disease were unscrambled, summed up and summarized to reveal the influence of "mild treatment should be applied in phlegm cumulating disease" on later generations and physicians in the inheritting or development of it.This study expect to provid a valuable bibliographic reference in traditional Chinese medicine theoretic development and lay a theoretical basis in clinical development through a systematical discussion on "mild treatment should be applied in phlegm cumulating disease"...
