BackgroundIt is reported that different diseases could coexist in oral or curtaneous mucous. The term coexistence is to describe a phenomenon that a patient is diagnosed with more than one mucocutaneous diseases happening concurrently or alternately, which increased the difficulties of diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment programs of the diseases. There are few reports in the literature describing systemic studies of coexistent mucocutaneous diseases. Both OLP and OLK are characterized by hyperkerotosis with white lacy lesions and plaques. Although OLP and OLK usually occur respectively, they do coexist occasionally in the same patient in clinic.ObjectivesTo collect and report the clinical cases with coexistence of OLK and OLP, and to analyze the clinical feature and pathological characteristics.Methods13cases coexistence with OLK and OLP were collected from a total of584patients who visited Stomatological Hospital of Shandong University between Sept2010and Dec2011. Histopathological examination was taken to diagnose OLP-OLK. The clinical and histological data was described and analyzed.Results:1.13cases with OLP and OLK were collected from a total of584patients. There were7male patients and3female patients, and the average age was48.5years, of which five patients in the40to49age group.2.8cases were performed of respectively OLK and OLP in different lesions or in the same lesion at the same time or successively,5cases were performed on one single infection whereas the histopathplogical examination conformed in OLK and OLP.3. The common sites were buccal (9cases), tongue (7cases), lower lip (5cases), hard palate (2cases), gingival (2cases), the altercation medial mucosa (2cases), and ventral tongue (1cases).4.7patients were found to have one or more local adverse stimulus.5in10of the male patients had a heavy smoke.6patients were showed a more spiritual anxiety, whereas menopause patient did not appear.Conclusion:OLK-OLP patients mostly occurred in multiple sites at diagnosis. The common sites were buccal and tongue. Minority cases were performed on one single infection whereas the histopathplogical examination conformed in coexistence of OLK and OLP. This phenomenon is more difficult to diagnose, and the treatment is more complex. It should be more noteworthy for a single symptom is more susceptible to cover up the truth and lead to misdiagnosis. Given the long duration and multi-sites, histopathological examination of the lesion should be performed from multiple sites in several times. Detailed inquiry of medical history and close follow-up observation should be made to prevent the malignant transformation.
