Objective: To summarize the ultrasonographic appearance of theplasma cell mastitis and analyse the causes of misdiagnosis of ultrasound. Methods: We retrospectively studiedthe appearance ofultrasonography213cases of plasma cell mastitis(PCM) and analyse thecauses of misdiagnosis.Results:195cases were detected lesions by ultrasonic, all singlelesions, lesion detection rate91.55%.48cases were diagnosed of plasmacell mastitis and diagnosis accuracy rate22.54%,40cases weremisdiagnosed, the misdiagnosis rate was18.78%,4cases were diagnosednormal, the rate was1.88%.The ultrasonographic findings included: ductalectasia(n=14), catheter inside diameter3mm~9mm, located mostly in thenipple and areola area;cyst(n=22), wall is a bit thick than purer cyst; solidnodule(n=110), the appearance of solid mass is irregular in shape andpattern, fuzzy boundaries, no obvious membrane echogenicity, the lowecho is uneven, between with belt strong echoes;mixed cystic and solidnodule(n=63), performance of mass were mixed, mass boundary is not clear, irregular form, the mass given priority to no echo with a little highecho in it, the mass mostly located in the areola area which position isshallow.195cases of those focal,93cases is located in the areola area, and76cases position is shallow,35cases of the echo were increased after thelesions, and9cases were decreased.10cases of lesion measure difficultiesbecause of the great volume, the rest of the lesion size5mm×3mm to71mm×34mm.108patients (50.70%) with lymph node enlargement in thesame side of armpit.146cases were detected the internal blood flowsignals, Peak Systolic velocity (PSV):6.6~60cm/s,an average of23.09cm/s;End-diastolic velocity(EDV):2~22cm/s,an average of8.66cm/s;Resistance index (RI):0.36~0.89,average0.63.Conclusions: Although no specific ultrasonographic signs were foundin plasma cell mastitis, and easy to be misdiagnosed, the diagnosis accuracycan be improved by analysis of the common ultrasonographic findings ofplasma cell mastitis in combination with clinical features.
