Objective To investigate correlations of aldehyde dehydrogenase1(ALDH1) expression with the molecular subtypes and ATP-bindingcassette subfamily G member2(ABCG2) of breast cancer. Methods The specimens from179case of breast caner were dividedinto five molecular subtypes according to the immunological markers(ER、PR、HER2and CK5/6), which were Luminal A, Luminal B,Her2-enriched, basal-like and breast-like subtype, respectively. Theexpression of ALDH1and ABCG2of the specimens were detected withimmunohistochemical staining, and the relationship between them as wellas their relations with the clinicopathological factors of breast cancer wasanalyzed. Results Of the179cases of breast cancer, ALDH1positiveexpression was present in43cases (24.0%). The ALDH1expression ratehad significant difference among the different molecular subtypes of breastcancer (P=0.003). The positive expression rate of ALDH1was16.7%(17/102) in luminal A subtype,21.4%(3/14) in luminal B subtype,54.5% (13/22) in Her2-enriched subtype,33.3%(8/24) in basal-like subtype and17.6%(3/17) in breast-like subtype, respectively. The positive expressionof ALDH1had no significant relation with the ABCG2expression(P=0.052). Both ALDH1and ABCG2expression were related to theadministration of preoperative chemotherapy (P=0.027and P=0.033) andALDH1expression was related to the HER2expression (P=0.006).Conclusions A small number of breast cancer cases have positiveALDH1expression and the ALDH1expression rate varies among themolecular subtypes of breast cancer. The expression of ALDH1has noobvious relation with ABCG2.
