As an agricultural country, the framework of Rural and Township Health Center (THC)in China plays its key role in the Three Prevention Network in the rural areas and in theprogress of health care industry of China because of its function and property. The quantityand quality of country doctors of THCs are directly related to the health level of the largerural population and the basic guarantee for establishing a new harmonious socialistcountryside. Chinese government introduces new policies and invests more money to supportthe development of THCs. However, many problems still exist there. Firstly, the countrydoctors of THCs are insufficient and the allocation in different areas is uneven. Secondly, thequality of them is not ideal. They are lack of reeducation and not high educated. Thirdly, theteam of rural doctors is not stable. This paper is designed to explore thoroughly the basic condition, further education, training requirement and training method of the country doctors of THCs in Guangdong, inorder to find out a feasible, acceptable and sustainable method for their further education, forthe establishment of health personnel training plan in the countryside of Guangdong Province. On the basis of1157questionnaires, the paper shows that there is a serious shortage ofcountry doctors of THCs, the sex ratio of country doctors of THCs is lopsided, the personnelstructure is not so reasonable and the overall professional quality of those doctors is low, dueto their lack of systematical training. The country doctors bear high pressure and have bigburden in daily work with low income, the overall job satisfaction is poor. Therefore theauthorities should, firstly, reinforce macro-control and enact more favorable policies for theteam construction, and invest more money to promote rural cooperative medical services. Thepolicy of oriented training doctors in rural areas must be practicable. Secondly, HealthAdministrative Departments should accelerate the reforms of personnel system to confirmstaffing level, establish professional qualification system and promotion mechanism fordoctors of THCs. Preferential policies should be introduced to encourage more talents to workin rural areas. The government should elevate the level of wage and offer pension and healthinsurance to them. Thirdly, the department in charge should improve the further education forcountry doctors, and strengthen the management of training and education. Finally, theconstruction of country doctors in Township Health Centers needs to be adapted to the actualdemand.
