Among medical institutions, public hospital, which constitutes the main body, is assuming more public welfare responsibilities. Currently, our nation is in the transition from socialist planned economy to market one, thus the consequences of lagging effect and system vulnerabilities, etc., have caused many problems for public hospitals. Thereby reputation disparities between hospitals increasingly emerge and then lead to hospitals’development crisis.Although the effect is obvious, still as a recessive concept, reputation is ignored. Undoubtedly, the critical channel for reputation mechanism to shift from implicit knowledge to explicit one lies in reputation evaluation. However, accrued theories and practices about hospital reputation are scarce, domestic research mostly stays in the phase of qualitative one about concepts and value. Therefore, to promote the work, public hospital with the characteristics of large scale and high reputation consciousness is chosen as the research object. Also the result will be regarded as the basis of evaluation available to other hospitals including private ones. Therefore, through the theoretical and empirical research, this article is written to achieve the main goal of constructing evaluation index for public hospital reputation.On the basis of stakeholder theory that is widely used involving reputation evaluation, the author creatively proposes the patient response theory as the guideline, which is combined with the theories about stakeholder and consumer response. When carrying the specific research methods, firstly, appropriate data is collected, with its data source from areas of southern, middle and northern Jiangsu province. Secondly, in the process of data analysis, through conducting exploratory factor analysis, the author extracts six major factors in the evaluation of hospital reputation of the patients’opinion, which are "medical effect","emotional attract","medical price level","efficiency","public benefit" and "development and innovation ability", each corresponding to its respective evaluation index. Then, confirmatory factor analysis is used for amendment. After these procedures, the index from the angle of patient response is established. Having achieved these, the author further discusses the external applicability of the index system through selecting different control variables to test whether they may affect the results.In the last part, the author discusses about external environment construction for reputation system application, reputation management and further looks forward to the improvement, expansion and application work.
