Objective To investigate the characteristics of Apelin in serum and its relationship to plasma lipid profil and obesity of essential hypertension (EH) and EH complicated with diabetes mellitus type2(T2DM).Methods34patients with EH,35patients with EH and T2DM (EH+T2DM) and19healthy subjects of control group (NC) were selected by the1999diagnosis criteria of diabetes mellitus by world health organization (WHO) and the2010Chinese guidelines for the management of hypertension. To measure the serum level of Apelin in each group by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and also measure the totel cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and the age. Secondary hypertension, dysfunction of liver and kidney, myocardial infarction, infarction of the brain, infection and et al are excluded by medical history, physical and laboratory examination. Use analysis of variance (ANOVA) by SPSS statistics17.0for data analysis. Spearman’s ranked correlation test to study the possible association. The probability of error at0.05was considered significant.Results1. The serum levels of Apelin in the group of EH (2.0±0.6μg/L) and the serum levels of Apelin in the group of EH+T2DM (2.3±0.6μg/L) were significantly higher than that in the group of NC (1.4±0.3μg/L), the difference is statistically significance (P<0.01).2. The serum level of Apelin in the group of EH (2.0±0.6μg/L) was significantly lower than the serum level of Apelin in the group of EH+T2DM (2.3±0.6μg/L), the difference is statistically significance (P<0.05).3. The serum levels of HDL in the group of EH (1.4±0.4mmol/L) and the serum levels of HDL in the group of EH+T2DM (1.3±0.3mmol/L) were significantly lower than that in the group of NC (1.7±0.4mmol/L), the difference is statistically significance (P<0.05).4. There were positive correlation between the serum Apelin and systolic pressure (SP), diastolic pressure (DP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), FPG, body mass index (BMI) and TG, and negative correlation between it and the HDL (P<0.05).5. There were not correlation between the serum Apelin and the totel cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and the age (P>0.05).Conclusion1. The serum levels of Apelin in the group of EH and EH+T2DM were significantly higher than that in the group of NC, which suggested that the serum Apelin may take part in the pathogenesis of EH.2. The serum level of Apelin in the group of EH+T2DM was significantly higher than the serum level of Apelin in the group of EH, which suggested that the serum Apelin may take part in the pathogenesis of T2DM.3. The serum Apelin may be related with obesity and lipid metabolism, which sugg-ested that the serum Apelin may take part in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis caused by hypertension, diabetes and the disorder of lipid metabolism.
