Object: To investigate the association between diabetes mellitus andrisk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Methods: We conducted a search of Pubmed, Medline, Cochrane andsome other resources using keywords “diabetes” or “diabetes mellitus” and“lymphoma” from inception through May2011. We included case-controland cohort studies with adjusted relative risks (RRs) and95%confidenceintervals (CIs) for the relation between diabetes and NHL incidence. Arandom-effects model was used to calculate pooled RRs.Results: A total of16researches (11case-control and6cohort studies)were included in the article. Meta-analysis indicated that patients withdiabetes were at a15%increased risk for overall NHL (RR,1.15;95%CI:1.02-1.31) without heterogeneity among studies. Similar association isobserved in both case-control study (RR,1.15;95%CI:0.99-1.35) andcohort study (RR,1.18;95%CI:0.93-1.50). Subgroup analysis showed thatstronger associations between diabetes and NHL were found in women (RR,1.49;95%CI:1.01-2.20) than in men and also observed in Asia (RR,1.90;95%CI:1.28-2.81) rather than in Europe and America. Conclusions: Our finding from the meta-analysis supported amoderate risk of NHL related to diabetes, especially in women and in Asiaregion. But more studies especially on histological NHL subtypes arenecessary to further evaluate the relationship between diabetes and NHL. Inaddition, the underlying biological mechanisms that link diabetes and NHLremain to be further elucidated.
