Background:Intensive care unit (ICU) syndrome is a psychiatric disorder caused by the special treatment and environment in the ICU and illnesses of patients, who may develop this syndrome during their stay in the ICU. Researches proved that ICU syndrome could lead to prolonged hospitalization, increased risk of death, medical expense and burden of family care, reduced life quality, and even long-term cognitive impairment. Attention was therefore focused on the incidence and effect factors of ICU syndrome to help prevent its occurrence and provide a basis for effective intervene.Objective:(1) To describe the incidence of ICU syndrome among patients in intensive care units;(2) To explore the effect factors of ICU syndrome.Method:A descriptive, cross-sectional study was used.253patients who received a treatment in ICU of Peking Union Medical College Hospital and Peking University People’s Hospital were selected by convenience sampling, Confusion Assessment Method (CAM-ICU) which was developed by Ely in2001was used to be a diagnosis of ICU syndrome for the patients. The effect factors of ICU syndrome were measured through researcher-created Questionnaire on Patients’General Information and Questionnaire on Disease-Related Information, Ballard’s Intensive Care Unit Environmental Stressor Scale (ICUESS) and Zhang Boyuan’s Type A Behavior Pattern Scale (TABP) and analyzed by logistic regression.Results:(1) Delirium occurred in29.2%of the253patients. ICU syndrome incidence rate in the internal medicine department was36.6%,24.5%in the surgical department and54.3%in the cardiovascular surgery department.(2) Logistic regression showed that effect factors of ICU syndrome were:disease severity (APACHE Ⅱscore)(OR1.103,95%CI:1.015-1.198), age (OR1.092,95%CI:1.053-1.132), length of ICU stay (OR1.009,95%CI:1.003-1.014), invasive mechanical ventilation (OR3.492,95%CI:1.138-10.714), physical environment as a source of environmental stress in the ICU (OR1.158,95%CI:1.083-1.238), type A behavior (OR9.510,95%CI:3.755-24.086). The Hosmer-Lemeshow test showed that the Goodness-of-Fit of the logistic regression algorithms was0.662(>0.05), indicating that the incidence rate of ICU syndrome in this model was very close to the observed value, i.e. the model was well calibrated. Conclusion:Incidence rates of ICU syndrome was high, which was similar to the results of former researches, and differ in various departments; disease severity (APACHE II score), age, length of ICU stay, invasive mechanical ventilation, physical environment as a source of environmental stress in the ICU, type A behavior were the effect factors of ICU syndrome.
