Object: To compare the clinical results of arthrodesis of the proximalinterphalangeal joints by miniplates and K-wires respectively.Method:59cases with85intra-articular fractures and bone defects ofthe proximal interphalangeal joints were treated with miniplates group(GroupA,55lesions in38cases)and K-wires fixation group(Group B,30lesions in21cases)by arthrodesis and were follow-up for4-39months. Bone healingtime, the time for return to work and postoperative complications wererecorded. Functions of fingers were evaluated using TAF scales. Results: Excellent and good rate of85.5%(47/55) was achieved incases treated with A group, while in cases fixed with B group the excellent andgood rate was66.7%(20/30).There was no infection in A group,4cases of Bgroup had infection. The average duration of bone union was7.2weeks for Agroup, and11.4weeks for B group. The time for return to work was13.1weeksfor A group,and17.9weeks for B group. Conclusion: According to comparison of the finger function, postoperative infection, duration of bone healing and the time for return towork between the two groups, fixation by miniplates is more favorable intreating hand fractures than by using K-wires.
