Objective: To study the role of SRF and SM22αin the occurrence and progression of uterineleiomyomas by investigating the differentially expression of SRF and SM22αbetween uterineleiomyomas and normal myometrial tissue.Methods:1. Tissue samples were obtained from patients (n=50) scheduled to undergo hysterectomy forsymptomatic uterine leiomyomas at the First Affiliated Hospital of Shanxi MedicalUniversity between 2010 and 2011. The matched normal myometrial tissue cut off at thesame time at the location far from the tumor over 2 cm.2. The expression of SRF and SM22αin all uterine leiomyomas tissues and correspondingnormal smooth muscular tissues were detected by EnVision immunohistochemiscal staining, and analyzed the expression of SRF and SM22αand the relationship with some clinicalsymptoms.Result:1. There was sixteen case were negative for SM22αin uterine leiomyomas, twenty casesshowed slight positive expression, twelve cases showed positive expression, and two cases(4%) showed strong positive expression, while cases were negative for SM22αin normalsmooth muscular tissues, eleven cases showed slight positive expression, eighteen casesshowed positive expression, and fifteen cases (30%) showed strong positive expression. There were significance differences between two groups (P<0.05). The positive ratio ofSM22αexpression in the normal smooth muscular tissues was significantly higher than thatof uterine leiomyomas.2. One case was negative for SRF in uterine leiomyomas, four cases showed slight positiveexpression, eight cases showed positive expression, and thirty-seven cases (74%) showedstrong positive expression, while cases were negative for SRF in normal smooth musculartissues, twenty-one cases showed slight positive expression, ten cases showed positiveexpression, and five cases (10%) showed strong positive expression. significance differenceswere found between two groups (P<0.05). The positive ratio of expression of SRF in uterineleiomyomas was significantly higher than that of the normal smooth muscular tissues.3. Correlations were found between the sizes of the leiomyoma in the uterine and the positiveexpression levels of SM22α(P<0.05). The expression had nothing to do with age and tumornumber(P >0.05). There was no significant relationship between the expression levels ofSRF and age, size, and tumor number(P >0.05). Conclusion:Compare with normal smooth muscular tissues, the expression of SM22αwas decreased trendwhereas the expression of SRF was raised trend in uterine leiomyomas. The expression of SRFand SM22αmay have some effect on occurrence and progression of uterine leiomyomas.
