Purpose:To observe the results of using heavy silicone oil (Oxane Hd), as endotamponade in retinal detachment with inferior or posterior breaks. Methods:This was a prospective study.Vitreoretinal surgery and endotamponade with Oxane HD were performed in32eyes of32cases of retinal detachment with inferior or posterior breaks. The best corrected visual acuity, retinal status and complications after surgery were observed. All the patients were followed up for6months at least. Results:All the patients were folloed up for7to21months (average,12.34±4.40months). Anatomical success was achieved in29of32eyes (90.6%) with a first surgery, and the overall anatomical success rate was93.75%(30/32). Postoperative visual acuity was improved in23of32eyes (71.90%) and24of32eyes (75.00%) had visual acuity better than or equal to0.02. The rate of relieving from blindness was53.13%.The complications included silicone oil emulsification, complicated cataract and so on.Conclusion:Heavy silicone oil (Oxane Hd) is an effective endotamponade in retinal detachment with inferior or posterior tears, and it can help patients avoid suffering from prone position after surgery.
