Abstract/Summary:
ObjectiveTo evaluate the effects of vitreoretinal surgery filled with heavy silicone oil(Densiron-68) for inferior PVR retinal detachment.MethodsThe cohort consisted of 52 patients treated by vitreoretinal surgery operated on for inferior PVR retinal detachment from March to October in 2007 .26 eyes were filled with an internal tamponade using heavy silicone oil(HSO) ,while 26 eyes using silicone oil(SO).Comparing the tamponade effect of this two substances in the short term after operation, including retinal attachment ratio, visual acuity, intraocular pressrure and lately complications concerned. The follow-up period was about 7 to 12 months in both groups.ResultsAt the end of the follow up, 24 of 26 patients for the HSO group achieved anatomical success while 18 of 26 cases arrived retinal attached, defined as complete retinal attachmen(tP<0.05). The manifestations of the failure of replacement of retina in the short term postoperatively were: inferior retina was redetached, 1 of 8 for the HSO group and 7 of 8 in SO group. Larger extent of the patients experienced postoperative vision improvement of varing degrees. There was no severe inflammatory reaction in either of the heavy silicone oil or the controls.ConclusionVitrectomy and heavy silicone oil(Densiron-68) tamponade is an effective therapy on the patients with inferior retinal detachment and inferior PVR. Densiron-68 seems to lower the incidence of recurrent inferior retinal detachment.
