[Objective]Based on the medical ethics of "Da Yi Jing Cheng" and the basic frame of nursing ethics, the study is to develop a professional value scale of nursing students, which can be applied as a measure instrument by the nursing educators to improve the nursing students’nursing professional value. Then the instrument developed in the research is used to study the present status of professional values of nursing undergraduate students and analyze the influence factors.[Methods]The theory frame of this study devebped on the basis of literature research, which includes the medical ethics of "Da Yi Jing Cheng"and the basic theory of nursing ethics. Then a questionnaire made according to the medical ethics of "Da Yi Jing Cheng", the item pool made through the interview of nursing students and practicing nurses. Then360nursing students were selected for the pre-investigation. Construct validity was tested by Exploratory Factor Analysis and the scale was evaluated by reliability analysis.894nursing undergraduate students were surveyed in the second part of the study; the professional value scale of nursing students was used for the survey. All the data was put into the software SPSS for statistical analysis to re-check the structure of the scale, by the methods of descriptive statistics, variance analysis and regression analysis, in order to analyze the present status of nursing students and the influence factors.[Results]Initial scale development:With the help of qualitative research, literature review and related questionnaire, the initial scale was developed including4factors and56items.Nursing professional values scale:360nursing students participated in the survey. Exploratory factor analysis was applied to determine the construct validity. Statistical analysis identified4factors (subscales), which are later named professional growth, altruism, career initiative and professional sense of mission, principle component analysis indicates that the four-factor reasonable solution explaining54.270%of the common variance is supported. The alpha coefficient for the entire scale and four factors ranged from.745to0.939and test-retest reliability coefficient of0.862(P<0.01), the results show that the scale exhibits satisfactory reliability measures. The actuality professional values of nursing students:the survey shows that nursing students hold a higher level of nursing professional values. The mean score of scale items is3.09±0.87±4.03±0.79, the mean score of four factors of nursing professional values is3.56±0.64±3.97±0.59, the factor of altruism has the highest score. The influencing factors on professional values of nursing undergraduates:taking nursing professional values as the dependent variable, and general data (grades, family background, political landscapes, only child or not) as independent variables, by multiple stepwise regression analysis, the result show grades and family background enter into the regression equation, but because of the R2is onry2.3%and3.9%, it is uncertain to say the two factors are the influencing factor of the professional values.[Conclusions]A27-item instrument, called Professional Values Scale of Nursing Students was developed in the study, and the scale has a good reliability and validity. The content of the scale can reflect Chinese culture background and the basic national conditbns of China, and can be applied to survey the professional values of nursing undergraduate students. The survey indicates that the professional value of nursing students is at a higher level in general. The medical ethics from "Da Yi Jing Cheng"’is related to the contents of nursing professional values in China, so the nursing educators should pay more attention to the role of the traditional culture to improve the nursing students’professional values.
