Objective:An earlier study indicated a possible relationship between Tourette syndrome (TS) and the cytokines. To explore this further, we analyzed the association of the cytokine genes, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12B and TNF-a, with TS in a Chinese Han population. Methods:A total of 128 patients diagnosed with TS and their parents were recruited for the study. The genetic contributions of the IL-8-251A/T, IL-10-592A/C, IL-12B 1188A/C and TNF-a-238A/G polymorphisms were evaluated using polymerase chain reaction and restriction enzyme digestion (PCR-RFLP) and haplotype relative risk (HRR) and transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) statistics. Results:Our results revealed no significant associations between the IL-8-251A/T, IL-10-592A/C, IL-12B 1188A/C and TNF-a-238A/G polymorphisms and TS (for IL-8-251A/T, TDT X2=0.25, P=0.61; HHRR=1.09,95%CI:0.76-1.57; GHRR=1.96,95%CI: 0.91~4.26. for IL-10-592A/C, TDTX2=0.44, P=0.51; HHRR=0.89,95%CI:0.63~1.27; GHRR=0.90,95%CI:0.54~1.50. for IL-12B 1188A/C, TDT X2=0.81, P=0.37; HHRR=0.85,95%CI:0.59~1.21; GHRR-1.40,95%CI:0.68-2.86. for TNF-a-238A/G, TDT Xz=0.42, P=0.52; HHRR=0.88,95%CI:0.60-1.28; GHRR=0.58,95%CI:0.21~1.63)Conclusion:Our data suggests that the IL-8-251A/T, IL-10-592A/C, IL-12B 1188A/C and TNF-a-238A/G polymorphisms may not be associated with susceptibility to TS in the Chinese Han population studied. However, these results need to be replicated using larger datasets collected from different populations...
