Objective: The purpose of this paper was to observe serum interleukin-6(IL-6) andinterleukin-8(IL-8) levels and to discuss the significance of IL-6and IL-8in patientswith chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Xining.Methods:66patients with COPD were selected. The patients were divided intoacute exacerbation period (AECOPD,29cases) and stable COPD (37cases) groups.AECOPD group was then divided into four grades: GOLD1(4cases), GOLD2(14cases), GOLD3(8cases) and GOLD4(3cases) respectively.30healthy peoplewere selected as control group. Serum IL-6and IL-8levels were assayed usingdouble-antibody sandwich ELISA.Results:1) IL-6levels in the AECOPD group (7.99±2.03ng/ml) were significantlyhigher than those in the stable COPD and the control groups (P<0.05). There wasno significant difference between the stable COPD and the control groups (4.09±2.01ng/ml v.s.3.23±1.28ng/ml, P>0.05).2) IL-8levels in the AECOPD group(768.29±143.88ng/ml) were significantly higher than those in the stable COPD andthe control groups (P<0.05). There was no significant difference between the stableCOPD and the control groups (335.55±108.22ng/ml v.s.346.18±143.19ng/ml, P>0.05).3) There was a negative correlation between the IL-6levels and FEV1in theAECOPD group (r=﹣0.75, P<0.001).4) There was a negative correlation betweenthe IL-8levels and FEV1in the AECOPD group (r=﹣0.79, P<0.001).5) The IL-6and IL-8levels in the AECOPD group were increased with the growth of degrees ofairflow limitation (P<0.001).Conclusion: Serum IL-6and IL-8levels in the AECOPD group were higher than those in the stable COPD and the control groups. There were negative correlationsbetween the IL-6levels, IL-8levels and FEV1respectively. These results suggestIL-6and IL-8are involved in the airway inflammation of patients with COPD andrelated with the degrees of airflow limitation. The serum IL-6and IL-8levels areavailable for the classification of severity degrees and the assessment of the diseaseprogress.
