Two medicinal herbs, Sauropus rostratus and Alsophila spinulosa, possessing thefunctions of heat clearing and detoxicating are widely used in the folk of southernChina. However, there are fewer scienticfic reports relating to these two herbs. Theobjectives of the present studies are to isolate and identify the chemical constituentsof Sauropus rostratus and Alsophila spinulosa, as well as to investigate the fingerprintof Alsophila spinulosa.The ethanol extracts of S. rostratus and A.spinulosa were isolated by columnchromatogramphies on silica gel, ODS and sephadex LH-20columns, respecitively, toafford25compounds. The chemical structures of18isolated compounds wereidentified by chemical reactions and spectroscopic methods. Among them,6compounds including methyl butyl3,6-andydro-2-deoxy-β-D-arabino-hexofuranose(LLY-1)、3,6-andydro-2-deoxy-β-D-arabino-hexofuranose (LLY-2)、 methyl3,6-andydro-2-deoxy-β-L-arabino-hexofuranose (LLY-3)、butyl3,6-andydro-2-deoxy-α-D-arabino-hexofuranose (LLY-4)、3,6-andydro-2-deoxy-α-D-arabino-hexofuranose(LLY-5)and dibutl phthalate (LLY-6) were obtained from S. rostratus. Other12compouns including diisobutyl phthalate (SL-1), vanillic acid (SL-2), benzoicacid-3,4-dihydroxy (SL-3), trans-1-(3′,4′-dihydroxy phenyl)-1-ene-3-butanone (SL-4),trans-1-(4-hydroxy phenyl)-1-ene-3-butanone (SL-5),3-(3,4-dihydroxy phenyl)prop-2-enoic acid (SL-6), piceatannol (SL-7),6-O-p-hydroxy-cinnamoyl-glucose (SL-8),1-O-feruloyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (SL-9), syringin (SL-10),(Z)-8-O-β-D-glucopyra-noycinnamic acid (SL-11) and oxo-bis(5-methylfuroic acid)(SL-12) were isolatedfrom A. spinulosa. Compounds LLY-1, LLY-3and LLY-4are new compounds, andSL-1~SL-12were isolated from Alsophila for the first time.The chromatographic fingerprint analysis of A. spinulosa was set up by HPLC,and10batches of the plants collected in different regions were analysized. The HPLCstandard fingerprints show eight common peaks. By comparison of the retention times,peak3,4,6, and7were identified as6-O-p-hydroxy-cinnamoyl-glucose,1-O-feruloyl-β-D-glucopyranoside, trans-1-(3′,4′-2hydroxy phenyl)-1-ene-3-butanone,trans-1-(4-hydroxy phenyl)-1-ene-3-butanone.The analysis method has good credibility and stability. The fingerprint is able to evaluate its quality in a scientific and effective way.
