Under the trend of universalizing, how to make the livingenvironment and architecture bothbecame contemporary and respecttotradition? How to revive the culture and tradition as well asbeinguniversalized? This is a worthy question that everybody in theworld shouldconsider, especially under development of theuniversalizing. There are always somearchitects in the wor ld tryingto be modern and contemporary, applying thescientific,technologies and political issues and absorb the local andregionculture in their works in the same time. Since then, thecriticalregionalism got more and more attention in the architecturefield. The essay is trying to explain thecritical regionalism throughan architectural node that people alwaysoverlooked. This node isopening. Kenneth Frampton indicated the importance oftheopenings in his research of critical regionalism, he said:“It tends totreat all openings as delicate transitional zones with a capacity torespond to the specific conditions imposed by the site,the climateand the light.” The openingsare described as delicatetransitionregion. In the introduction, the essay introduced the backgroundandbasic knowledge of critical regionalism and the meaning of theopenings inarchitecture. Starting with chapter2,the architecturalopenings will be the core of the research and be interpretedof itsmeanings and different existing forms in different layers ofarchitecture.The chapter3and4are mainly about the relationshipbetween the criticalregionalism and architectural openings, studiedin depth about how the openingsmake architecture more attractivebesides its function meanings. As acontrollable design element, howit expresses and translate architects’ mind?And the essay willexplain how architectural openings react to the regionalcontext and how to express the traditional culture.
