As the important public place for citizens' activity and communication, commercial pedestrian street reflects the development level in society, economy and culture of a city. It is not only the city card of commerce and culture but also the beautiful reception room of the city. Facing the problems wildly existed in the design of commercial pedestrian street: no variety in space design, loss of regional culture, deterioration of material environment, separation of historical continuity and ignorance of customers' need, a kind of new theory and method is in great need to be discovered.Semeiology is an analytical method, which can help the designer to keenly observe the cultural aspect and apply it to the work design. With the background of human civilization, architectural semeiology regards the commercial pedestrian street as a system for a scientific research. On one hand, the theory effectively helps people to understand the pedestrian street thoroughly on a new level and to realize its significance. On the other hand, it builds a bridge between the designers and users. The paper analyzes a collection of construction examples of pedestrian street of home and abroad. On the basis of practical research, through studying the several samples in the way of semiotic thinking, the principle of semeiology used in the design of pedestrian streets are concluded respectively. Besides, the function and meaning of semeiology applied in the design of commercial pedestrian streets are proposed. The purpose of the paper is to provide a new concept and method for realization of urban context inheritance and cultural innovation.
