The main purpose of this thesis is to examine the current situation of the performance of logistics systems at Port of Rotterdam (European logistics centre) and Port of Singapore (Asian logistics centre) and the potential of Port of Chennai, second largest port in India and increasingly becoming a logistics hub for the Indian sub-continent. All ports have their strengths and weaknesses in the logistics system. As a result, this thesis mainly show comparison of three ports on the basis of performance of the port logistics systems, being evaluated by different factors and data from other top ports has also been taken into account for better comparison and two of these ports are already among the best in the world and the third one has the potential to be in the list of the best ports of the world. Some of the main factors evaluated are infrastructure, logistics services, border procedures and time and reliability of Supply Chain and finally the main problem at the Chennai port and possible application of queue theory to solve that problem. The study also emphasizes a port’s important role in the logistics development and the changing role of the ports from traditional transport hubs to value-added logistics centers.
