Four Space Prototypes In Architectural Design By SANAA

This paper attempts to analysis and retrospective the "continuation of characteristics" in SANAA’architectural works, try to understand how SANAA can accumulated to form a unique creative world in the while maintain a significant change from the architectural phenomenology angle, in order to explore a design strategies based on the spirit of place.The first part of the paper defines the relevant theory. By summarize and sort out the theory-spirit of place in Western architectural phenomenology, extracted two basic concepts of the spirit of place:meaning and structure. Then combined the study of spirit of place in Japan and SANAA’fragmentation theory, to clarify the specific concept of meaning and structure further at spirit of place in SANAA’ buildings. The specific concept is space prototype (platform, garden, shoji, settlement) with three relations (the relationship between spaces, the relationship between space and people, and relationship between space and environment);The second part of the paper sort out SANAA’relevant work cases as the basis of four space prototypes. For each space prototype, analysis and summarize the actual cases from four aspects:the elicitation of space prototype, the relationship between spaces, the relationship between space and people, and the relationship between space and environment. Then summarize the different space advocates, the feeling of space and morphological features between four space prototypes.The first part in the third part of the paper horizontal compare of the four space prototypes, then analysis the system characteristics of space prototypes as a design strategy and longitudinal summarized. There including the clear image, simple construct, freedom framework and associated logic. Finally, this paper try to explore the enormous potential implicated in the specific design of space prototype through a specific space prototype experiment.
