The solar tower thermal power technology is the most economical way to produce solar electricity in large scale. This kind of system is a complex thermal system with nonlinear, distributed parameter, multi-variable and strong coupling features. In addition, the solar energy is intermittent and unstable, so that the power station is always in a dynamic adjustment process. Because of these, the control and optimization of the power plant is a challenging problem. Therefore, modeling and simulation of the power plant is extremely significant for the safety and steady-operation of the plant.In this thesis, the dynamic model is developed for each subsystem of the TSA plant which is located at the Solar Platform of Almera, Spain, then a hybrid model for the power plant is proposed and simulations are performed to validate the model. The main contributions of this thesis are as follows.(1) The air circuit system of the TSA is decomposed into several subsystems including receiver, pipe, thermal storage and steam generator. Then dynamic mathematical model is developed for each subsystem through combining mechanism model and empirical formulas.(2) A switching hybrid dynamic model for the air circuit system of TSA is established based on the characteristics of the different operation modes caused by the change of solar radiation in the day.(3) The validity of the models of subsystems is verified by steady-state and transient simulation. Moreover the dynamic characteristics of the different operation modes are studied by simulation.(4) The PID control system in the typical operation conditions of TSA air circuit system is simulated by using the developed model. And a multi-model control scheme based on switching supervisory controller is designed according to the characteristics of the hybrid system.The simulation results demonstrate that the developed model is able to describe the characteristics of the power plant correctly, which provides the foundation for further investigation of the control scheme design and operation optimization of control scheme of solar thermal power system.
