Academic Achievement And Influence Of Architectural Theoretician Wang Tan

Mr. Wang Tan, the theoretician, educationalist and historian, is an important scholar in Chinese modern architectural field. The analysis and study to Mr. Wang Tan’s achievements and profound influences has important academic and realistic significance. Therefore, the paper will study Wang’s academic achievements and influences from3aspects-introduction and translation of western modern architecture, study and preservation on Chinese modern architecture, and modern architecture educational thoughts.For more than half a century, the study on Chinese modern architecture had been carrying out intermittently and it had never been researching in a continuous way as a whole system of discipline; and also, the preservation to the existing modern architectures did not attach much importance to many parties. Until the beginning of1980s, originated and conducted by Mr. Wang Tan, who was the theoretician, ideologist and educationalist of Chinese modern architecture, the study and preservation to the Chinese modern architectures were developed into a new stage. Wang Tan organized various academic activities for developing and supporting the movement, and he also published many articles and books in this field. On the initiative of him, the study and preservation to the Chinese modern started developing in a systematic way widely and deeply.Wang Tan also had insightful and thoughtful knowledge on the western architectures. He introduced the western architecture theory into China at the early stage of China’s reform and opening which begun in1980s; he organized the translation on the architecture theories, held seminars for introduction and discussion of the western architectures’development and trends, thus the Chinese and international architects and scholars could get more exchanges in the architecture area.Starting from the educational background and development history of Mr. Wang Tan, the1st Chapter of this paper analyses the formation of his architectural thoughts. Chapter2through4analyse his achievements in architecture theory and architecture education based on his activities about introduction and translation of western modern architecture, study and preservation on Chinese modern architecture, and modern architecture educational thoughts, etc.According to the analysis and study to Mr. Wang Tan’s achievements and his profound influences in Chinese modern architectures, we can understand the theories and thoughts of all the Chinese architects in the same time of the years, and we can also get more specific and objective knowledge regarding Chinese modern and contemporary architectures; and furthermore, it can also be taken as an reference and a guidance to the architecture entrants in their study and practical work.
