Mechanical structure and optimization design for mechanical parts aim to make the structure light weight, small size, high efficiency, low cost, good reliability, and etc. However, because mechanical structure is often more complex, using the optimization method based on the experience of the traditional mode is not very effective. Along with the computer technology and the rapid development of the finite element method, some complex engineering problems can also be solved by high performance computer with the finite element method. The finite element method provides not only an important numerical calculation method for structure analysis, but also a platform for a structure optimization. Because modern products design method is dynamic, with computer simulation, the finite element method can be applied in the product design. Using the computer to simulate the practical constraints and load conditions, conduct structure design under the situation that performance and quality requirements are met. When the product cannot meet the designing requirements, instant product modification can be conducted. Then execute simulation analysis again until desired product performance is met. Therefore, the modern design method reduces the labor, material, time cost, shortens the product design period, and reduces the design cost and manufacturing cost. For the above reasons, the topological structure optimization method has drawn more recent attention in structure optimization.This article first introduces the history of the development of the topology optimization, expounds upon idea of topology optimization in the practical application, introduces the origination of topological optimization in products design, provides the main flow of topological optimization design and introduces four types of structural optimization methods, which are size optimization, shape optimization, morphology optimization and topology optimization. The article also introduces the structural topology optimization of3kinds of methods in detail, namely the variable thickness method, uniform method and variable density method, and the topology optimization of several normal algorithm and finite element analysis software HyperWroks, applying with examples that are given in the form of this technology in design of the car body, frame, spare parts structure optimization design of the specific application.Base on the characteristics and method of3D model simplified principle, focus on the characteristics of automobile swing arm geometric model, and utilize the HyperMesh in HyperWorks application to divide3D finite element model, to establish the finite element model for car swing arm. Constrain the finite element model, apply load, and simulate the practical work to create three conditions. Under the topology optimization module, define the objective function and constraint of topology optimization, and then solve it. Finally obtain the density distribution of structure, and compare to obtain the topology optimization scheme for car swing arm.
