Frontal impact takes the highest ratio position in automotive crashing accident,which also leads the most passengers’ injury. Based on this point, researching inautomotive passive safety in driving direction has deeply influence for automotiveindustry. Increasing the crashworthiness for a vehicle is one of the most importantmethods to protect passengers in traffic accidents. And among all crashing protectionparts in vehicle, the frontal longitudinal takes leading position. An achievable designmethod for side member is issued in this article to optimize crashworthiness of frontallongitudinal, meanwhile functionality and economy factors are also underconsideration.Based on Response surface method, section dimension of the frontal longitudinalis optimized in this article. The optimization section dimension is concluded in the end,which can increase crashworthiness ability of frontal longitudinal in frontal impacttest so that the passive safety capability of vehicle is also increased. The followingresearch is included in this article:(1) A certain sedan car is researched in this article, and based on FEA explicitalgorithm, engineering experience, reasonable modeling method, computationefficiency and accuracy, a FEA model of a whole vehicle for frontal offset impact withdeformable barrier is established in CAE analysis.(2) An overlapping impact test is achieved in FEA model, choosing the mostordinary method in automotive impact test—evaluating acceleration of B-pillar andcabin intrusion as basic parameter in order to assess the crashworthiness for wholevehicle and frontal longitudinal.(3) A crush model for frontal longitudinal is established. Based on sectiondimension of frontal longitudinal, design variables are extracted. According toresponse surface method, the optimal result is calculated in order to get the finaloptimization section dimension of frontal longitudinal.(4) Combined the optimized frontal longitudinal with ordinary vehicle, offsetimpact simulation is implemented. Then assess the performance of optimized sectionof frontal longitudinal in vehicle crashworthiness and passive safety.
