The belt conveyor is one of the most important translation equipments which can carry categories of materials. Belt conveyor pulleys are the key driving parts in belt conveyor. The failure of pulleys has serious consequences on normal working of Belt conveyor. There are many causes of the failure of pulleys. One of the important causes is that designing parameters of the structure is irrational. So, it is necessary that the pulleys which are designed by analytical design method are analyzed by finite element analysis, and it will be very significant to enhance the design capability of pulleys, also it offers a doable direction to design the parts which are set on the other mechanisms.On the basis of references, the structure and classification of belt conveyor pulleys were analysed. Stress of driving pulley and driven pulley were analysed, and the functionless expressions of pulley shell were offered. Contraposing the discrepancies of present analytic design methods of pulleys, the merits and drawbacks of different design methods were researched, a relatively complete analytic design methods of pulley parts were summed up. On the basis of theory about interference connection and taper-lock, it analysed the mechanical model of taper-locks, deduced the stress expression of fitting surface between shaft, hub and taper-lock.The examples of driven pulley and driving pulley were nonlinear finite element analyzed by ANSYS. It obtained stress and strain situations about pulleys when only affected by pretightening force or affected by pretightening force and external applied load together, and it contrasted result of FEA with result of theoretical arithmetic to prove that result of FEA was exact. Through researching the result of FEA, it obtained stress variable rule and stress concentration position of pulley parts, In particular taper-locks. It found that stress situation of each fitting surface depended on the pretightening force, when pulley affected by pretightening force and external applied load together. The discover offered dependable thereunder for modifying parameters of pulley.FEA modular of belt conveyor pulley was developed by APDL and UIDL which were offered by ANSYS. Customers just input parameters of pulley, the FEA modular can automatically complete works of pulley modeling, loading and inquiring results.The FEA modular supplies a simulation base for the reasonable design.
