With the increasing of number of automobiles owned by China, traffic collisionaccidents claim about1.2million lives worldwide each year, and permanently injuresanother20million. Collision accidents account for the majority of all traffic accidents, andside collision is one of the most frequent types, nearly to front collision. This article studiesand summarizes the design of structural side impact protection on a certain automobilemodel; it also discusses the basic theories underlying side impact simulation, with focus onnon-linear finite element analysis and related algorithms. Based on these, the authorperformed simulation and optimization of structural side impact protection on the specificmodel using LS-DYNA and MADYMO software. This article will first provide a brief introduction of computerized simulation of vehiclecollision, as well as standards and criterions of damage evaluation applicable to occupantrestraint systems in side impacts. Second, it attempts to build a mathematical model of sidecollision restraint system by coupling LS-DYNA and MADYMO, and verifies the model bycomparing results from simulation and real automobile collision tests. And finally, buildingupon the relatively high validity of the simulation model, the article makes use ofMDAYMO plasticity methods to investigate various scenarios of B-pillar and car doordeformation and their damages to occupants, and study the deformation trend and range ofb-pillars and doors during collision. In the model, first to change the door riders position ortheir material, second to position a pelvis pusher model to reduce the damages to theabdomen and thorax T12value to reach a final optimization proposal. The design and improvement proposed in the this article are feasible and effective andhave been verified by real vehicle experiments; therefore they have a significant practical value to engineering.Advanced design or improved on measures is applicable and valid, applying importantengineering meaning and value by the vehicle collision tests.
