Since the21st century, with the rapid development of the auto industry, the domesticauto industry competition is more and more fierce. Domestic auto enterprises are more andmore attention to the development of the new model and more and more enterprises chooseto improve design method in the product design stag. The specific approach is according totheir own design platform to design software for secondary development.This paper is based on improving the auto product design efficiency, and uses thesecondary development of CATIA for parametric design of the car rack and pinion steering.This paper is parametric modeling through car rack and pinion steering. Creatinginteractive interface by using VB and writing program code by the macro mode to realizesecondary development of CATIA and complete the construction of the steering gearmodel library. When users input corresponding design parameter values, automatic call ofmodel can be realized.First, this paper briefly described the car rack and pinion steering system, discussedthe current situation of the domestic and foreign car rack and pinion steering and illustratedthe purpose and significance of the research. Then this paper analyzed the functions of thesystem, constructed the overall framework structure of the steering system and selected thesystem platform. Compared to the secondary development of CATIA by using differentmethods and introduced the general process of secondary development of CATIA. Thenthis paper was parametric modeling for car rack and pinion steering. It introducesparametric design, the way and processes of parametric modeling of steering parts andvirtual assembly of steering gear, constraint of assembly and interference analysis andinspection. The last, it developed and linked interface of the steering gear model library.This paper mainly included the design of main system and interface of components andintroduced the method of interface of model library links with CATIA, including quotingthe type of CATIA in VB, starting CATIA by VB, editing the source code of VB, runningthe executable file and generating the necessary model. The research that powerful parametric modeling function of CATIA,VB programminglanguages and other advanced technology got together by parametric design systems of carrack and pinion steering gear in this paper was to achieve the automatic generation ofsteering gear model. It improved the efficiency of the development of the auto steering,reduced the developed costs, and alleviated the work intensity of the designers.
