With the short of city land resource and more attention to environmental protection, the advantages of power cable stand out. Because cables can be layed in underground and underwater, connect the land and island, and are affected by the natural environment factors. The goal of this paper is to find a method to calculate the electrical parameters of power cables accurately and easily, and study the operation of the cable line. Furthermore, the paper also develops a software for the calculation of the electrical parameters of power cables and electrical characteristic analysis. The main contents include the following three points:1. To calculate the electrical parameters of power cables accurately and easily, three methods to calculate the electrical parameters of power cables are discussed and compared. The calculation principles and equations are introduced. Furthermore, power cables of different structures are studied to verify the accuracy and applicability of the presented equations. In addition, the calculation equations of the zero sequence and positive sequence parameters on the basis of the fundamental matrix of the power cables are also deduced in the paper. Finally, a recommended method which can be applied in all structures of power cables is given.2. To ensure that cable can work safely and reliably, the paper summarizes how the voltage and current change along the whole cable line. To solve the problem that cable line produces a lot of capacity of reactive power, it explains the influences that different shunt compensation have on the performance of the circuit.3. The paper develops a software for the calculation of the electrical parameters of power cables and electrical characteristic analysis which can draw the curves how the voltage and current change along the whole cable line in C++Builder, and then it studies the electrical characteristic of power cables.
