At present our country’s higher education has been popularized, and the scale ofhigher education institutions began to expand rapidly. During the process of rapidexpansion of campuses, the sustainability of the campus environment is an issue notto be ignored. At the same time, the campus sustainability is not only to evaluate thesustainable practice level of campus, and the review and inspection of formermeasures, and also to provide guidance for university’s sustainable strategy andpractical measures for the next step. Thus a benign circulation is made, promotinguniversity develops along the sustainable path.The first chapter of the paper introduces the development situation of the greenuniversity, describes the research methods and contents. The second chapter collects17green campus assessment system all around the world, and analyzes the systemframework, indicators selection and other features comprehensively, then points outthe problems about the environment assessment in the existing assessement system.The third chapter puts forward the application of the ecological footprint methodon campus environment assessment from unsustainable perspective could solve theproblem of inaccuracy on campus environment assessment in the mainstreamassessment systems; This chapter introduces the ecological footprint method, andinvestigates the present situation of applying ecological footprint to assess campusenvironment, finding out the choice of indicators and the method of indicatorsorganization.The fourth chapter studies the factors impacting the campus environment’secological footprint assessment deeply, including the definition of the assessmentsystem’s scope, the importance of data collection, the organization of indicators,proportion distribution of the indicators, assessment results, and so on. After that thischapter points out the problems and nonstandard points of the campus environment’secological footprint assessement.In the fifth chapter, the process of campus environment’s ecological footprintassessment is reviewed based on the deep analysis of influence factors in the lastchapter, proposes an imaginary closed space to define the route map of campusmaterial flow in the closed space, on which the new methods of indicator organizationare advanced. The chapter establishs a complete indicators database, letting the universities and colleges could choose the corresponding indicators according to theirown situations; then rates the campus sustainability according to the assessmentresults. Finally, the campus environment of Rutgers University at Camden is assessedusing this assessment system.This article tries to find out and correct the existing problems of campusenvironment’s ecological footprint assessment through the study hereinbefore,constructs the green campus environment assessment system based on the ecologicalfootprint method, hoping to quantify the environmental influences of campus fromunsustainable prospective, to provide reference of constructing our country’s greencampus assessment system.
