The numerical simulation and analysis of the cooling water and the two-phase cooling water with sediment in thermal power plant have been made by using FLUENT software on the basis of introducing the heat characteristics of cooling water, the basic methods of water intake-outlet layout, and the basic theory of sediment movement. The process of forming sediment and its impact on water intake in power plant are given by analyzing and comparing sediment volume distribution on horizontal and vertical cross-section around water intake and outlet simulated by taking, two-phase numerical model under the different velovities. It is found by simulating the temperature distribution of the water intake in the power plant under the overlapping arrangement with different sedimentation and different flow velocity that the temperature of water-intake inlet increase constantly with the constant silt of sediment in water intake, the constant clogging of water-intake inlet, and the constant palliation of the water velocity as sediment is deposited by action of drainage, upstream flow and back flow. With the extent of siltation and the river flow slow down continuously, the temperatures of water intake in power plant water will continue to rise. As for the interaction between cooling water and sediment in it, the drainage affects the sediment concentration, sediment-carrying capacity and the speed of movement of sediment; on the other hand, sediment affects the temperature and water quality of the drainage in turn and also causes the corrosion in the pipes. It is concluded that sedimentation has a important influence to the temperature of the water intake, the timely dredging is a positive action for the safety of power plants, and can reduce the temperature of water intake and hence improve water quality and raise the economy of it. Finally, analysis of the influence of silt on the economy of power plant is made and the further research work and direction are looked ahead.
